WordPress plugins are extensions that add more functions to your wordpress site.

Due to the use of wordpress plugins, beginners are able to add more functions to their websites without writing any line of code or hiring a developer.

WordPress plugins add more functionalities into your wordpress theme, maybe the theme you are using doesn’t have the option to display related posts, you can add related posts by installing a related posts plugin. We are going to talk about how to install wordPress plugins soon, so keep reading.

Are wordpress plugins different from wordpress themes?

As we all know that wordpress themes makes our wordpress site look good and also makes it easy to navigate, but wordpress plugins add more functions to your wordpress theme, which gives your website additional features.

There are thousands of wordpress plugins with different functionalities to enable you customize your wordpress site the way you want. WordPress themes have their own features but you can extend those features with wordpress plugins.

Now let’s assume you want users to be able to share your posts or pages on different social platforms, then you need a share plugin to do that. Plugins can also override your theme default styles and functions making it easier for you to add your own styles and functions.

How to install wordPress Plugins

Here I will show you three ways you can install wordpress plugins on your website.

  1. Admin dashboard
  2. Download plugins
  3. Manually

Admin Dashboard

To install wordpress plugins in your admin dashboard, login to your wordpress admin area, then navigate to  “Plugins>>Add new” , and click on “add new” you will be in the wordpress plugins directory, you can search for the Plugin you want using the search box, click the install button, next click on the “Activate” button. You are done installing your preferred wordpress plugin.

Downloaded Plugins

You can download wordpress plugins from any third-party sites, before you can take this step make sure you download the plugin .zip file. To install a download plugin, login to your wordpress dashboard and navigate to Plugins>> and click “Add New” on the wordpress plugin directory click upload and upload the .zip file and click install, after installing click on the activate button, you’ve successfully installed a download plugin.

To install wordpress plugins manually, that means you are attempting to add the plugin directly into your wordpress files. In this step, you will need to have access to your wordpress files, you can use an ftp client I recommend you use Filezilla or if you are using Cpanel you can use the file manager.

Download the wordpress plugin you want to install, next, navigate to your wordpress home/www/wp-content/plugins directory and upload the download file. Login to your wordpress dashboard and navigate to “plugins>>installed plugins” if you uploaded the file correctly, you should see an option to activate the plugin. Just click on activate.
